Resilient Cities through Culture

Imaginations conceptulized, organised and ran the first UIA Summer School in Seoul, South Korea as part of the UIA, International Union of Architects world congress.

Under the theme Resilient Cities through Culture 32 students of architecture from 15 countries around the world came together for two weeks in Seoul, along with tutors from five colleges and international speakers, to discuss the role of culture in sustainable city making. The theme for the UIA congress is Soul of City and it sets out to assess and enhance the unique features of the city of Seoul. While climate change and knowledge-sharing have no country borders sustainable environmental solutions often have to be tailored to specific contexts, climates and cultures in order to succeed.

With this objective the summer school set out to explore how a deeper understanding of a specific culture and community can support sustainable city structures for tomorrow through Sharing, Communities, Hacking, Confrontation and Adaptation.

IMAGINATION 4 was held in the neighbourhood Mullea Dong in Seoul, and was a partnership between the Danish Architects’ Association, UIA Seoul 2017, Bartlett School of Architecture, Mimar Sinan University, University of Genoa, Royal Danish Academy, Dankook University, University of Genoa, Hanyang University ERICA, Hongik University, University of Seoul, Yonsei University and and Imaginations Cross Cultures.
